Habits

I am not a religious person, so I don’t technically participate in Lent, but I do find this time of the year to be a good time to give up bad habits. Mostly because there are many other people giving something up right now, and I personally find it a bit easier to give up something you love/are addicted to if your friends are going through the same struggle.

So what have I decided to give up this year?

Well, for starters, fast food. A BIG part of my weight gain had to do with me being lazy with cooking and letting not-so-healthy “restaurants” make my food for me. Also, has anyone else who eats out a lot taken a look at how much money you spend on it? Because I have… and yikes.

They say that it takes 21 days to make or break a habit, so to give myself a little balance, while I give up my fast food, I am going to make a habit out of daily physical activity. Not going to the gym, because sometimes it’s just nice outside and I’d rather go for a walk or hike in the park! And then sometimes I would rather do squats in my living room, because I know that the gym is going to be busy certain days.

Is anyone else giving up or starting a habit this week?

Goals.

Now might be a good time to let you know what my personal health/weight loss goals are.

I’ve briefly mentioned my career goals, vague as they may seem (because there are many things I want to do). However, I haven’t specified what my health goals are- just that I’m trying to lose weight and be a healthier person.

First of all, I don’t have a specific number of pounds I want to lose. I know how much weight I need to lose to be considered a healthy weight, and I know how much I used to weigh when I was at my absolute happiest and proudest of my body. But, bodies change, and it’s been 2.5-3 years since I was that happiest weight, so I’m not sure if trying to achieve a specific number would be the healthiest for me.

Instead, my goal is to get to a place where I am even happier, and even more confident in my body than I was a few years ago. You may have noticed by now that I keep saying “happiest with my body,” instead of “thinnest.” That’s because when I was happiest with my body was not the same time as when I was my thinnest.

I really just want to get to a place where I love my body again, and I honestly don’t know what that weight will be. Yes, I want to be considered healthy, so I do have a minimum goal that will place me in that category. Yes, I will likely try to lose more weight beyond just breaking into that healthy category. But I also want to be toned – not buff, just strong.

As a side note, today I have some errands to run. I’m currently getting ready to drive an extra 20 minutes just to go grocery shopping at a store that I know I won’t run into anyone who hasn’t seen me since I gained weight. I’m making changes in my life that will hopefully help me get to a healthier, more confident place, but right now I’m still in that embarrassed state of mind. It’s hard, but I’m trying.

Yesterday was a weird day for me, food wise. I was running late and skipped breakfast, which I know is bad, but it happens. Here’s what I ate the rest of the day:

Lunch: Chicken Sandwich
Dinner: Tuna Salad and fried pickles (I know, I’m working on cutting out the fried things).
Snacks: Roasted Pecans, two fiber one bars

Cravings.

So, I’m thinking it may take me a while to get into the groove of this blog thing. Mostly because I can’t come to a decision on what time of day I want to post my blogs. Do I want to post in the mornings, detailing my previous day? Or at night, right before I go to bed? I’m not sure yet, and I do still fully plan on sharing things like my daily workouts and meals with everyone, as well as just whatever I’ve done that day.

For now, I just want to talk about a few things that have happened in the past few days.

First of all, I somehow managed to have a failure and a success in the same action. The day after I posted my intro blog, I went shopping and out to lunch.. and I ate pizza and drank beer at lunch. So not what someone who wants to lose a lot of weight should be doing, right? Well, the truth is that I’ve NEVER been a healthy eater. When I was at my happiest with my body, I still ate Chinese takeout, pizza, and taco bell on a pretty regular basis. The main difference between then and now is that I used to work out like crazy, and I ate a lot less of those foods in one sitting. (I also did have a pretty healthy balance of decently healthy meals worked in there too).

So, at first I felt like I had failed, because I was trying so hard to stick to just healthy foods, because I do want to lose the weight rather quickly if I can.. but I stepped on the scale the next morning, and it hadn’t changed! My weight didn’t go up from pizza and beer that I’d had the day before, which made me realize that, even though it wasn’t the healthiest choice, I was able to enjoy it without overdoing it/having too much.

I probably won’t have as many “cheat” meals as I did when I was already thin, but I’ve also officially decided not to cut out my favorites entirely.

Which brings me to my next point – a distant relative of mine (I basically know her only through Facebook) is a fitness/health person, and she is always posting about things like sugar detoxes. Now, I know myself and I know that a no-sugar diet is not a long term solution for me, but one of my biggest problems is that I’m addicted to a lot of the food that’s made me gain weight. My weight hasn’t really changed for the past several months, because I’ll eat a couple of healthy meals and then a craving hits. So I am considering maybe trying a couple of these “detox” diets to kick my system into gear.

Before I get any hate, yes, I also know that these could easily double as fad diets, which obviously don’t work long term, because when you go back to eating normally you gain it all back. And yes, I know that your liver does all of the detoxing your body needs. But, I don’t plan on going back to eating the way I currently do, and while my liver may detox for me, I do need something to kick my cravings away. My hope is also that I will lose enough weight initially from a couple of detoxes that it might be easier to begin working out again (for anyone who has never gained weight, I assure you that working out when you’re already thin, even if you’re out of shape, is 10000 times easier than working out with extra weight on you).

It’s still early in the day, so I don’t have a daily food or workout journal for you yet, but I’ll try to post again later today if something interesting happens. If not, I’ll see you tomorrow. 🙂

An introduction to my new life.

Oh hi, it’s been a minute. When I started this website, it was for a school project, and for the last almost year I’ve been a bit neglectful of it. But that is about to change in a pretty big way.

You see, I’ve had a very.. interesting couple of years, which I will explain more in depth in this blog, and talk about why I’m making a big change in my life.

Where do I begin?

Almost exactly two years ago, I started a new job. At first, I thought I would really enjoy it, and in some ways I did, but I was very unhappy, and ultimately it probably came down to the fact that I was nowhere near where I wanted to be or thought I would be at that point in my life. And as time went on, I became more and more unhappy.

As a result of my unhappiness, I also gained a substantial amount of weight.. Enough that I have been so embarrassed by how I look that I have avoided seeing my friends, going to events I know I would enjoy, and taking pictures. Since I’ve been avoiding most of my friends who still remember my thinner self, I’ve also become very unhappy in my social life.

So, a few weeks ago I did something that I probably should have done a long time ago – I took a step down at my job so that I can focus on things that I want to do, things that interest me more, and things that make me happy. For example, this blog. I’ve always loved writing, but it was something that took a backseat the past couple of years, because when you reach a certain point of unhappiness, you are so emotionally drained that you just don’t have any energy to do things, even if they make you happy.

So what do I want to do with my life now? Well, there are many things! I’m still in grad school, but I ultimately want to work with animal rescuers and within the social media/planning realm of the music industry. I love to write, and currently have ideas/plans for writing five books. I am also open to any businesses that are really into making a difference in the world in some or many ways.

For right now, I plan on taking everyone who reads this on my journey to happiness, which will include getting myself back to a healthy place, where I love my body again. Yes, I will be blogging daily to share any workouts I’ve completed and what food I’ve eaten, but I will also be using this blog to talk about all of the new things I plan on trying, (like hopefully moving to a new city).

I also have a lot of great ideas, just waiting to burst out now that my creativity is a little more free and I’m not feeling so drained. I’m also going to be very open and honest on this blog – I’m going to share struggles, anxieties and fears, successes and failures.

Think of today as a sort of introduction day/rough draft of sorts. Tomorrow is day one of sharing my daily life with you all (even if it ends up just being 2-3 of you), and I can’t wait! 🙂

Twenty Four

Today I want to talk about something that is considered taboo and controversial in the career and professional world – wanting more.

I have always had big dreams and goals for my career, and sometimes my mind tends to branch out and want to do ten things at once. I am currently in grad school and have already decided on two more degrees that I want, and recently I have been considering going back and getting a second bachelor’s degree so that I have the option of someday going into veterinary school! (This one is my current top pick: https://vet.osu.edu)

It may seem like I can’t make up my mind, but really I am just passionate about so many things, that I want to get a taste of them all. I am currently studying media, because most of the careers I am interested in have an option for online media consultants, or will need one in the future (because the internet is only getting bigger).

But that doesn’t change the fact that my love for animals and their welfare is very strong, and I would love to be able to provide care for animals, particularly rescues in need.

In two days, I will be turning 24 years old, and part of me feels like I should be well developed in my career already, but a much bigger part of me wants to keep taking classes, and learning everything that I can, so that I can truly be everything that I want.

In one of the classes I have been taking this semester, I have learned more about myself than I did in all four years of my undergraduate studies. I have taken courses from this professor before, and she is truly the best teacher I have ever had, but this particular class has really motivated me to work harder towards my career goals, and continue learning everything that I have a desire to learn. Throughout the class, I have ended up not only reading and watching the required materials, but than researching the topics from them more, because I found them so interesting.

I had to read so many awful, boring books during my undergrad studies, that I grew to loathe reading, but this semester, I got to read a book that I not only enjoyed, but that I actually learned from. I was able to learn how to build a platform online, which is helpful for everyone, but especially me since that is something that I hope to do a lot of in my career.

Here is the author’s website: http://michaelhyatt.com

For now, I plan on continuing my education on the business side of things, but I have already looked into a few science classes and veterinary programs for my other goals.

I hope that everyone reading this is inspired to go after what they want, and remember that settling for anything less is never going to make you truly happy – whether you want to be someone with ten potential careers, or if you’re happy with just the one, don’t let anyone else’s ideals impact what you want out of life!

Building a Platform

I recently read a book, by Michael Hyatt, “Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World.” This book tells readers how to best set themselves apart and gain the right kind of attention online, and as the author has been successful in this, and has many online followers himself, I felt confident that his advice would be good, especially since my ultimate career goals include building platforms, and operating social media accounts for a business, charity, or musician.

Here is Hyatt’s Twitter, which is a verified account with 273 thousand followers:

https://twitter.com/MichaelHyatt

In his book, Hyatt speaks about how important it is to post about things that add value. Now, in the music industry, one of the best things that artists can do is connect to their fans. I’m an avid Twitter user, and I often have random bands and band members follow me, and others, trying to get more people familiar with their music. But I wondered if those bands were more successful if they spoke about real things on their Twitters, and replied to their fans, rather than just constantly promoting themselves or a new song or album.

This is the Twitter account of an artist I recently started listening to, Karizma:

https://twitter.com/callmekarizma

On his Twitter, he has a pinned tweet about his music and tour, but the majority of his tweets are just fun things about his everyday life, and he even makes fun of himself in a few of them, which gives anyone on his page the sense that he is a real person. His first full length album isn’t even out yet, and he has almost 20 thousand followers.

The fact that he already has a strong following, without even having an album yet, tells me that his social media plan has been successful. When his album does come out, he has 20 thousand people who he can share it with, and who will hopefully be sharing it with others. The fact that he is so genuine and likable makes it easier for people to want to help him, and share his art with their own friends (I have even retweeted one of his posts about his album myself)!

Because music is my favorite thing, and I do ultimately want to work in that industry, I hope to be able to utilize this information in my career, by ensuring that artists are as open and real as possible with their fans, and hold back on over-promoting. While it is important to get your work out there, it is more important to build rapport with people who can promote you to far more people through word of mouth!

Now, when it comes to promoting and building a platform for an animal related charity (another goal of mine), it will still be about a connection, but with the animals rather than the people. Because really, who could say no to a face like this?

I’ll leave with this: To anyone reading my blog, just remember that business, and building a platform is best done when you are honest about who you are, talk about real things, and genuinely connect with and care about your audience. Not only will this gain attention and make you more likable, but you don’t have to pretend to be something you aren’t!

Creative with a Conscience

Who Am I?

My name is Katie, and I have spent most of my life trying to figure out how I’m going to make a difference in the world. Animal rights are very important to me, and I always dream of winning the lottery and immediately ending things such as pet homelessness and animal testing.

A little over a year ago, I graduated from college with a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing. I am now in grad school, and will receive my Master’s degree in Journalism – New Media later this year. Ultimately, I would love to work for a company as a social media liaison. Preferably a company that is related to one of my big passions – music, beauty, or animals. Or, even better, I would love to work in all three industries in some way.

Earlier this week, we learned about storytelling. Storytelling is going to be a huge part of my career, because I will always be telling a story of some sort, whether it be the story of animals in need, the story of a local band that you should be listening to, or the story of a fabulous beauty product that could transform your skin.

My Plan

Now that we’ve spoken a bit about storytelling, I would like to share a story with you about my goals. About two weeks ago, I took a trip to Columbus, Ohio. While I was there, I visited a store called Lush:

Have you ever walked into a place and just felt right at home? Lush is a company that stands for everything in which I believe. They fight animal testing, they support multiple charities, protect the environment, and purchase ingredients ethically.

I had great conversations with everyone who was working at Lush, and I after researching their company more, I really hope to work for them someday, and share their story with the whole world, and get more people involved in their vision.

In the meantime, I am working as a Senior Education Consultant for Sephora inside JCPenney. I have also decided that after I finish my current Master’s degree, I would like to enroll in a music business master’s program through WVU, to better learn how to work with the bands that I love, and share their stories with potential fans.

It may seem like I have very different career interests, but I truly want to ensure that I have a great career, full of things that I love and that are important to me. There is nothing that makes me happier than introducing my friends and family members to a new band, product, company, or cause that I love, and it would be fantastic to be able to do that in my career.

I plan on utilizing this blog to document my everyday life, and sharing where my story takes me. I hope that within my lifetime I can see some great advancements for animal rights (and I hope that I was able to help with those advancements), and that I also get the chance to work with some of my favorite bands and companies.

Until then, please take a look at what Lush is doing to fight animal testing, and what you can do to help end animal testing as well!
